Timber windows bring warmth and authenticity that uPVC simply cannot match — but should you choose hardwood or softwood? Both make excellent bespoke windows; the right choice depends on your property, budget and how much maintenance you want to take on.
Softwood windows
Softwood (typically slow-grown redwood or Accoya®) is the traditional choice for painted joinery. It is easier to work, takes paint beautifully, and is more affordable.
- Lower cost than hardwood
- Excellent for painted finishes — period-correct on many homes
- Needs repainting every 5–8 years to stay protected
- Modern engineered softwood and Accoya® offer outstanding stability and 50-year-plus lifespans
Hardwood windows
Hardwoods such as oak and sapele are denser, more durable and naturally beautiful when stained or oiled rather than painted.
- Exceptional durability and resistance to wear
- Stunning grain — ideal for a natural oiled or stained finish
- Higher cost, but a longer life with less frequent maintenance
- A natural fit for oak-framed and high-end properties
Cost comparison
As a rule of thumb, hardwood windows cost roughly 15–30% more than the equivalent softwood units. However, the lower maintenance and longer lifespan of hardwood can close that gap over 20–30 years.
Which should you choose?
Choose softwood if you want a painted finish, a period-accurate look, or a lower upfront cost. Choose hardwood if you want a natural timber finish, maximum longevity, or are matching an oak-framed home. Either way, a well-made timber window will comfortably outlast a plastic one and can be repaired rather than replaced.
We handcraft both storm-proof and traditional flush-casement windows to suit any property. See the windows page, or read about period window restoration if you own a listed or older home.
